What’s the game plan next week?

Alright! Time to get back out again. My farm usually quiets right down this time of year. Haven’t had any deer on camera since rifle season. Typical this time of year. I have a friends farm about 15 mins away that I hunt during muzzleloader. He’s loaded over there. But as for mine, it’s like the deer just pack up and leave the area until April. I think I’m going to check out some thicker cedar bush areas I have, snow should be melted next week so I’m gunna look for some fresh tracks around some new areas. Maybe bump one and get a shot off. Don’t really have a plan of attack this time of year.

what are your plans?

Unfortunately work is going to get in my way for most of the week but my plan is pretty similar to the regular gun season. The farms I have permission on are pretty quiet right now but the public land I frequent gets better as it gets later in the season. I'll mainly set up on travel routes and hope for some action.

Any particular type of bush? Hardwoods, swamp, cedar etc?

It's mixed big bush with a lot of low cedar swamps. It's a bit of a yarding area in the winter, which is why it gets better as the season gets later.

If there is no snow or just a little then my Dad's place will have deer, if the snow is flying and the temperature drops then they may all bugger off.

I got a text from him this morning, had a buck at 50 yards from his stand last night in a bit of brush, too far for his bow but not for the smoke pole of shotgun. Hopefully we both have some luck next week.

My plan is simple. Sit quietly and wait - just like shotgun/ml season. My favourite time to hunt.

unfortunately i doubt the action of movement will really be on until about the 8th or 10th of december, correlating to the rut of last month. if there's snow, i'd follow the tracks and set up on a hill or something or near a stream. this is a good time to spot and stalk bucks bedded down. with the ML you've got the extended range compared to a bow so it should pay off if you are quiet enough.

just wondering if calling or scents will work also, i did read somewhere a second esterus can be in effect during ML week

I believe rattling late season has been known to be a bit better.
