Many will suggest "Water Dog" but training has advanced since that book was written that there are better sources of information. Reading is great but DVD's are better as you can see rather than interpret the training sessions.
Here are a few that -
- Jackie Mertins "Sound Beginnings"
- Bill Hillman "Training a Retriever Puppy"
- Chris Atkins "Duck Dog" series
- Rick Stawski "Fowl Dogs" series
- Evan Graham's series
I have a CBR just finished his second season hunting. I am very happy with how he turned out. I leaned a lot on Bill Hillman DVD's as DC suggests but also found the book The 10-Minute Retriever by John and Amy Dahl useful. It has lots of references to training a Chessie which I don't find any more difficult than the several Labs I have owned but there are some subtle differences this book was helpful with.
Water Dog is a classic--and there are many other books and videos --but if you are looking to have a solid dependable hunting companion and you are not using an e-collar---waterdog is an excellent choice--there is also a video by the author -you may be able to find it on amazon--best of luck
