20 Bird Flock out smarting me

Hi everyone. This is my first post hear and I am very new to Turkey Hunting. This is my first hunt for turkey.

I've been hunting my farm for the past 5 days and have yet to get a bird. There is a flock of 20 birds that I have been watching for three weeks before the season opener. I have been watching their habits for 2 weeks. I have set up three locations to hunt them 2 weeks prior to the season opener. From what I have observed, I would set up in one of my blinds. But they are not following what I have observed the past few weeks. I have my decoys out and making all the calls. but I just can't draw them in.

Any advise would be help full.

Get rid of the decoys and hunt them mid morning. If you can, set up 10 yards into the woods and cast your calls into the woods and scratch the leaves. Pick a spot where the field has a hump so that the Toms have to come to the top of the hump to see into the woods. If they have a clear line of sight into the woods, they'll probably hang up. You need to use the terrain so that they have to come to a high spot to see the calling hen. Try to get on the downhill side of a hump. If the terrain has some steep ridges, setup at the top of ridge and make sure that the edge of it is in shotgun range. Good luck.

Ok. thanks for that advice. My land is fairly flat, but I will get rid of the decoys and ill try a new spot in the woods.

Try to use some thick cover so that they have to walk around it to find you on the other side.

I have found at season start that gobblers with hens will not respond to calls or come to decoys early in the morning - you have to find a spot to intercept them after they fly down from the roost and just ambush the Tom.
Later, when those hens start nesting, the gobblers will be much more willing to come to calls and decoys later in the morning.

All good advice already. Birds in a winter flock are very hard to call in. They should be breaking up now. Unless you get a shot when they fly down, be prepared to wait them out. The hens will leave and go to lay. The gobblers and jakes will be on the prowl. Later morning, and afternoon is a good time to hunt, especially towards the middle to end of May. My favourite time is the last two weeks of season.

Lose the blind and just set up where you think there are going, sit quite and wait. if you need to it will be easier to get up (or crawl) to adjust to there movement. I got my first bird with a compound bow this way (the one in my avatar) and i was having the same problems as you. Good Luck!!

First year hunting turkeys ? I hope you get one but be prepared to have old Tom teach you a few things. LoL ! As it's been stated ; 20 bird flock ? Sounds pretty big more like winter flock and with that many girlfriends available it's hard to draw him away. Make sure you are well cammo'd, keep movement to a minimum and patience . Lots and lots of patience ! They are one tough critter to hunt and have humbled many a man.

Try the blind in the middle of the field also.

Do not me afraid to mix it up. Ditch the decoys, sit in the bush, different calls, ect.....
