Central Opener with the kids
So the kids started their online schooling last week and the systems are full of glitches. They were pretty frustrated with how things were going, so I packed the trailer and canoe and took them up for some upland and ducks. We camped on some crown land near Sudbury. I’ve been watching wood ducks pile into a little swamp for a few weeks and gave it a shot. It was quite cold for this time of year, which was a welcome feeling. I’m not a big fan of wearing my waders in 25 degree weather. My son and I crept out of the trailer around 5am, portaged the canoe for 200 yards to the swamp and paddled in. We set up roughly where I’ve been watching the ducks fly into. I set up my wood duck decoys, and hoped for the best. 2 minutes after legal we were getting buzzed by woodies, but it was too dark to see them. None landed in the spread. Ten minutes later we dropped our first, to my sons excitement. Shortly thereafter we got 2 more. The next hour was dead. The grumbling in my sons stomach signalled the end of the hunt. We collected the ducks and decoys and paddled back. Back at camp the girls were up getting the fire ready for breakfast and were super excited to see the birds. The highlight of the hunt, in my sons words, was the shooting star he saw while I paddled us in. Great memories for me and my family.
