Exactly, the "dry tinder" has been burned. Sounds insensitive to say it that way, but by the time the "3rd wave" rolls around, many of the people seriously at risk have already been exposed, especially in the small, densely populated places that are being discussed. It can be spun to appear to be solely because of the vaccines, but it isn't solely because of them at all. A certain level of herd immunity was achieved before vaccines were administered at all. Vaccines (pre-treatments) are having some effect surely, but not the only effect.

Target audience: laboratory professionals and users of IVDs.

Purpose of this notice: clarify information previously provided by WHO. This notice supersedes WHO Information Notice for In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Device (IVD) Users 2020/05 version 1, issued 14 December 2020.

Description of the problem: WHO requests users to follow the instructions for use (IFU) when interpreting results for specimens tested using PCR methodology.

Users of IVDs must read and follow the IFU carefully to determine if manual adjustment of the PCR positivity threshold is recommended by the manufacturer.

WHO guidance Diagnostic testing for SARS-CoV-2 states that careful interpretation of weak positive results is needed (1). The cycle threshold (Ct) needed to detect virus is inversely proportional to the patient’s viral load. Where test results do not correspond with the clinical presentation, a new specimen should be taken and retested using the same or different NAT technology.

WHO reminds IVD users that disease prevalence alters the predictive value of test results; as disease prevalence decreases, the risk of false positive increases (2). This means that the probability that a person who has a positive result (SARS-CoV-2 detected) is truly infected with SARS-CoV-2 decreases as prevalence decreases, irrespective of the claimed specificity.

Most PCR assays are indicated as an aid for diagnosis, therefore, health care providers must consider any result in combination with timing of sampling, specimen type, assay specifics, clinical observations, patient history, confirmed status of any contacts, and epidemiological information.

Actions to be taken by IVD users:

Please read carefully the IFU in its entirety.
Contact your local representative if there is any aspect of the IFU that is unclear to you.
Check the IFU for each incoming consignment to detect any changes to the IFU.
Provide the Ct value in the report to the requesting health care provider.

We are still seeing a 99.2 survival rate with today's deaths from confirmed cases 3 weeks ago. With 24 dead that had the virus in Ontario.

The government expects over 200 deaths each day in Canada from cancer and we are ignoring this because of a virus that is killing way less. Talk about priorities lol.

Apparently Canada is only 2.7 % fully vaccinated. Ouch .

Well as much as cancer sucks it’s not contagious and sure a small percentage have had both shots but almost 30% have had the first one which significantly helps with COVID illness which is why with our limited supply of vaccine they are only administering one dose for now to most other than the elderly that are very vulnerable

One need only look at India, to see what government priorities should be !!!!

Yes but most of them will likely need a third shot as the second shot will be done to late, the Feds even ordered enough to cover for the third shot just last week. Most likely because they realize that they were wrong about extending out to 4 months against all recommendations.

I don’t agree with exceeding the manufactures spec for the second dose either. I get the logic and time will tell if it’s the right decision but it’s not the one I would have made

Be prepared to roll up your sleeve twice a year if that is the path you wish to follow.
Viruses constantly mutate. Nothing new in respect to it and our immune system quickly adapts if you are strong and relatively healthy.
The government will be quick to remind you of your next scheduled jab as part of their "New Normal"

Lots more vaccines are on there way in the next couple of weeks. I just booked mine for next week.

Sure. I get a flu shot every year so I don't make my 87 year old mom sick. It's no big deal.
