The most common type of poaching is the otherwise legal guy (bought a tag) who commits the crime of time; ...shots a deer on the way to the stand 45 minutes before or stays in the stand 30 minutes after legal hunting time.
And unless a CO hears (witness) him, all the hunter has to do is cover his tracks by falsifying the ‘notch’.. And since there is no possible way for a core body temperature check by a CO or Biologist that is able to point ‘time of death’ accuractly to within 45 minutes..he won’t be caught.
So what is the point of notching the date/time, I can’t think of a scenario where it would prevent or convict a poacher. It’s a useless requirement to curtail the most common type of poaching.
Probably why that requirement is not used in many states.
