A general rule of thumb is 2 to 3 hours of preparation time for each hour of actual class time. So if 5 hours of teaching time looks like small potatoes to you, add on the other 10 to 15 hours of preparation time. Teaching is not quite like extemporaneous preaching, done properly a lot of forethought and preparation has to go into it. Teachers just don't leave the classroom, drive home, have supper and after supper kick back and watch television. There are of course some which have time after classes to do a bit of preparation before actually leaving the school for home. If you walk pass a school after school hours. You might pause to wonder why the teacher's parking lot is still full of their cars. Could be the teachers are working on their next day's lessons? It can be that teacher who have been teaching a subject for years have less preparation time, but they still have to go over there material and make necessary revision, and line up any resources that may be need.
