Should a subsistence poacher be charged, convicted and punished? In many cases yes and in some cases justice would be better served by extending grace and compassion. It is possible to do both and still see justice served.

Gilroy you are a brave man to say such things, if you did live up there, I hear they would burn down your barn for much less..... ps. if you did sell your big house down here ,you could likely buy the whole town in the sticks.

I agree if it is temporary poaching ,but to do it forever, I think not, and is he raising his family to be the next generation of 'subsistence' poachers? If he says well my dad did it, and his dad before him, and so on , should they not relocate? At how many animals and years do you draw the line, or is there even a line if you go far enough north?

I don't live in the sticks and understand your response. But on a public forum we should not promote law breaking. Does this happen up north sure it does. Should we promote it on a public forum where we are judged by anti hunters no. Hey but I would prefer to help any family and would in a heart beat but not crazy about promoting illegal poaching. I hunt hard and have to buy tags and hunting equipment and work to fill a tag and if someone needs to feed their family there are other ways to support your family.

Gee G, almost sounds like you think Fns and Inuit should be hung for stealing our deer.

Lets not, because thats not the point of drawing the parallel. But its a slippery slope.

Where in my post do i promote poaching and/or law breaking? Poaching is wrong. All I am saying is that there are times when a mistake is made and that it is okay to extend grace and compassion based on the circumstances and still see justice served. That does not mean one does not recognize that the was law broken or that you condone their actions. It just means that you are choosing not to punish them for their mistake - this falls within the definition of grace not promotion. Without a little bit of grace we would all be in a world of hurt at different times.

I don't really see any "promoting poaching" here. I do see some with compassion for their fellow man and wisdom in others that realize this isn't a "black and white" issue,either. There's always some "gray" in between. Fundamental justice demands each case be judged on it's own merits. Blanket statements and condemnation should not part of the equation.
