The diff lock can only be used in low range, and you don't want to go very far with it on anyway as it's only for tight jams and you can't turn the handle bars when it's engaged. You need to come to a complete stop before engaging the diff lock. AC comes with reverse over ride, meaning only when in reverse can you hit the button for some more revs.
When I'm riding slower technical trails, or just slow trails in general I ride in low. It's easier on the entire CVT system and the torque is always there. My machine has a Suzuki engine (last year of them in 08), although the 700 Cat engines are excellent engines as well.
