It's amazing how people think the government works. You realize that to do these things, they need to pass legislation, right? With all the attendant political liabilities, because public opposition to a long gun registry is all about cost? It's not about who does it. It's about spending money on it.
The CPC under Harper was able to abolish the LGR without political cost because they had successfully branded the LGR, outside Quebec, as a massive waste of public funds. This is why no-one outside Quebec will commit to bringing it back. And nobody is going to get away with it by giving the money to someone else.
The fact that politicians lie doesn't mean they'll do the things you fear. Harper's "hidden agenda" never came to pass, in spite of his past statements, in spite of his record of untruths, because he was a pragmatist above all. And the Liberals have always been a pragmatic party -- that's why they've been so good at keeping power.
We tend to ascribe our motives to others. Ideologically driven people believe their political opponents are ideologically driven. This is why so many gun owners believe in a hidden agenda of complete disarmament, and are unwilling to accept the alternative: that the Liberals don't actually care that much about guns. What the Liberals really care about is keeping power. Just as Harper distanced his party from his back-bench pro-death-penalty, anti-abortion ideologues, Trudeau is not going to pay political penalties to push through someone's gun control agenda. So there is no reason to think there is a nefarious secret plan to bring in a registry disguised as something else.
