Many of them know way more rights than you do . Nothing wrong with their advice.

There's nothing to suggest any of these ex-coppers are lawyers or even paralegals.

Don't know who you're actually referring to but I know a few paralegals, all of them are ex-police. And they do quite well with their presentations in the courtroom. I've also dealt with some awfully shoddy lawyers in court whose ethics and morals are more than questionable.

Three people you never work for without upfront payment, cops, lawyers and post secondary teachers anywhere near law. They all know the ins and outs so well they know just how to slide you up an inclined plane wrapped helical around a cylinder.
