Six things the media got wrong about the graves found near residential schools

My 6 yr old daughter asked me the other day if I knew about the 200 kids who were murdered on Canada Day 50 yrs ago....this was during watching fireworks with some neighbors kids. One of the 10 yr olds told her about it. I asked them where they heard that, and was told she overheard it on the news. I told them that many years ago, disease, sickness and other things took alot of young lives. I also let them know that these weren't just found like they were hidden, and lots of people knew they were there. If you listen to the news, you'd think they lined up 500 kids, shot for 5 min, and bulldozed over.........

As bad as it normally is, I've never seen the MSM so willfully negligent since the beginning of the pandemic. They no longer do 'investigative' reporting, dig down and find the background facts of a story . All they've been publishing is unsubstantiated stories with 'clickbait' headlines that are misleading and sensationalized.

I suspect, in regards to topics like 'Indigenous' news, the editors are afraid to print the truth and fear the backlash from social media. They seem to have lost their backbone due to being publicly funded, so they won't rock the boat on issues that affect the sitting party's agenda.

Nailed it! Their profits are shrinking at an alarming rate with readership staying about the same or,in some cases,shrinking,also. Just as a business plan,it's not rocket science for them to see the handwriting on the wall,hence,the clickbait,false headlines and fake news.....anything to garner attention to keep from fading into oblivion.

My biggest surprise was am640...they always towed the line, but leaned right more than not. I put it on the other day, and you'd think the zombie apocalypse was here, and the agenda was in ur face health orders........

I was sure I had posted that article on the "We see you" .... maybe a glitch, I noticed now and again a post disappears, I seldom check to see if they did but have noticed the odd one.

Several of the points I put here too though with some stats etc. for earlier and they had the numbers for older children.

The Indian act included the requirement to educate, underfunding, the govt trying to push it all on the church, poor planning and execution... lots of blame to go around. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" - many attributed to this quote

Simplification of a problem is not understanding it, the media and especially some politicians specialize in NOT understanding or contributing to a positive outcome!

I'll say it again, time to toss the Indian act and race based policies into the 19th century waste bin, those that need help should get it, incorporate and make accountable the reserves and as a redress for the residential school system free University and some other benefits continued until say 2050 but it is the 21st century ... bring on star drives and flying cars... not racial ghettos and dirty water!

The only fake news was Erin O Toole and his video at Ryerson University telling the nation that the residential school's were set up to educate aboriginal children. Dah... bad move, you placed yourself on the wrong side of history, shot yourself in the foot and probably lost the next election to boot.

While there were residential schools in Canada as early as the 17th century in New France, the residential school system did not really develop until after the passage of the Indian Act in 1876, which gave the federal government the right and responsibility of educating (and assimilating) Indigenous people in Canada. Beginning in the 1880s, the government cooperated with Roman Catholic and Protestant churches to establish a system of residential schools across Canada. In 1894, the Indian Act was amended, making attendance at residential schools compulsory.


You should try reading the Truth and Reconciliation report sometime, it seems you lack important facts.

LOL Yep,stating the obvious with a bunch of media hacks present never helped anyone. The only reason O'Toole may lose is because he's taken party policy a way too far to the left,trying to be all things to all people. I fear he's lost his base. Remember when John Tory did the same thing when he led the Ontario PC's and Dalton McGuinty kicked his a** around the block? The same thing is about to happen to Erin O'Toole if he doesn't smarten up.

He could easily find the facts if he chose to, but instead he chooses to ignore them as they don't fit his lieberal agenda.

Regarding the horror of unmarked graves.... It's not that uncommon. A couple of decades ago, someone went through the burial records at our church (German Lutheran church founded in 1863) and put together a list of names of people buried there that had no head stones. They put up a single stone marker with all the names of the settlers buried there in unmarked graves. There are about 60 names on that stone. Should I call the media? Nearby there is a small ancient Wesleyan cemetery without a single stone. Just a single wooden cross. That "unmarked graves" has become a trigger for activists shows an alarming ignorance of Canada's history.
