Baiting for Deer

I think now is the right time to start. I used to run gravity feeders with grains some years ago. The primary objective was to inventory the deer by camera prior to season but they were also good to hunt over.

I started them in July and kept Them filled as regularly as possible. The # of pics on camera would constantly build over 3 months. In august I’d be getting 50-100 pics every 2 weeks but By October I’d be getting 600-1000 pics every 2 weeks.

If they like the spot and the feed, and you keep it there consistently their pattern on it will get stronger for sure.

I gave up due to raccoons…..

I have a few stumps that I use for salt licks and keep them topped off all year long and if I have extra goodies I put that out also nearby the stumps. My old orchard is in a field near the house so the deer may not feel safe there during the daytime but back in the woods they should.

While not necessary to the spirit of the thread ,but hunting deer without baiting is a HOOT!

I do put bait out, buts it’s done earlier (May&Sept) with the objective of attracting deer to my trail cams. Once the season starts, I can’t be bothered to haul bait.

I don’t feel entirely comfortable hunting over bait as, somehow, I feel it’s cheating. This a personal thing and doesn’t reflect on others if they choose to do it. I wouldn’t have much fun on an outfitter hunt where baiting was the go-to way to hunt.

I like to set up my tree stands in quiet out-of-the way funnels or natural openings.

You want to talk about baiting lol last year buddy cleaned out bottom of his deep freezer. Brought it out 1 Oct. stuff been frozen 4-5 some 7 years ago expired can goods

Raspberries one of the first top disappear

Cherries went fast too

He had some frozen hand picked soybean pods can’t remember what they called them they went first

Sweet corn canned stuff expired went fast

Frozen grape concentrate. Deer dug hole getting that.

Funny stuff

I have a crab tree in the yard and the apples would come ripe at this time of year. What I did was pick them off the tree and those on the ground, put them in 5 gallon pails, toss in a bit of sugar and water then seal the pail. Come November the apples had fermented and turned to mush. The smell was so strong it made my eyes water while carrying it into the stand. I then dumped this slop on the ground by my bait pile and the ground was eventually torn up so bad by deer trying to get at the stuff that it was unrecognizable.

It's illegal to get deer drunk and then hunt them!
