Unfortunately, even when refined...the kind of oil from the oilsands, and much of our offshore production is 75% heavy crude. This isn't used for gasoline of diesel.

Our current refining abilities also only are able to refine 20% of our production. This is why we ship so much out.

So while the backyard garden analogy is nice, it's hardly indicative, or reflective of the actual situation.

"You have a backyard garden with highly sandy, iron rich soil, and you can only grow potatoes. In order to have a balanced diet, you need to take your potatoes to other markets, in order to trade for other fruits and vegetables"......is a more complete analogy.

Like it or not, we don't live in a protectionist economy. We participate in the world market, and as such, we pay world market prices for commodities in demand.

Well until justlied and sleepy Joe pull their heads out of each other's backsides and stop forcing this green new deal while China increases its coal burning open your pocket books as we are all going to pay more.

Just had a look at my Enbridge Gas bill and the gas supply charge just increased July 1st by over 50%!!!!! Come winter, Canadians are going to feel that gouge.

There some truth to that expression, however the jt seems have forgotten where the priorities of citizens wellfare fit. Even in world market, one can make deals to help locals. Spending tax dollars left right and center does not help the local economy a single bit

Agreed. But the OPs original assertion was specifically that we should be using our own oil....

In a nutshell-regardless if we can or can not use our own oil for driving ,Our Government has all the tools to utilize the resource to our benefit.
Simplest is to reverse profit from sales to offset proper gas /diesel prices.

Claiming our own oil can not be used domestically is just a way out for them ,to avoid doing what is their job-take care of Canada ,and us, Canadians.

It can't be used domestically, for gasoline, nor diesel....this has zero to do with whatever party is in power, just statement of fact.

Our refining capacity is literally only 20% of our current production, which means 80% are shipped outside our borders.

You are also aware that all of the oil, and the infrastructure to extract, and refine same are actually within the realm of private interests, correct?

Now, as I have pointed out. We live in a global economy, and we can't pick and choose where we want to let the global market influence it. Want to continue buying a cheap toaster from Wal Mart? Or a dining set that costs less than $5K?

The country is currently in a state where our raw materials and resources are being shipped outside our borders, in return for finished goods. As such, all the raw goods, and resources are subject to market conditions.

Can you articulate what tools the govt can use to "utilize the resource to our benefit"?

You also can't rail and complain about big government controlling interests, and making lots of rules, but then pick and choose which ones you like.

Our oil markets were open to private interests years ago.....

Not much.

But that's hardly what you originally asked, or were seeking confirmation of, now was it?

Do not misunderstand my point.

Don't like the Government in power? Valid point, there's enough to be frustrated with. And a PM that probably should never have been given another term in office ( IMO).

But taking a run at the current government about oil prices, or the fact that we collectively have let global markets exploit our resources, in return for commercial interests, and cheap consumer goods....that's a tough one to lay simply at their feet.

Want to complain...look around your house....how much is disposable or cheaply obtained from China? Buy Canadian? Support local?

Even Domestic cars have a significant amount of production from overseas....buy a GM assembled here? The parts sure weren't. BUT the heavy crude we export may have made a lot of the plastics....

These are the few terms they want us to believe in.
The only other thing they do is : shrug their shoulders.

None of the Free market/Oversees supplies etc happened at their own good heart,so we can stuff our house full of cheap overseas stuff-but cruel Financial Interest of the involved.

As far as what to do? What tools to use?
I stated earlier ,to reverse the profit,from selling our oil,and supplement gas prices for the imported oil.

Tool #1:

A very active and very low efficient General Secretary of the UN urged Governments few weeks ago, to tax the War Profiteering Companies(mostly Big Oil Companies making Zillions in profit due of the"war").


Tool # 2
Many EU countries started to poke around taxing the extra profit. They will find ways to do it,and if not -by the winter,their own Population will make them find the way,or chase them from power.
If there is will -there is a way.

Being picky with rules which one to like /or not,falls back to history: Canada AND Canadians (as far i know)was doing quite allright "before"the big Kunbaya ,and opening markets since the 1990-ish.

I realize times have changed,but there should be still the "rule of the land " i do business in,is the governing rule.

Negotiating /re negotiation with involved parties is never hard-and while may not yield 100 % satisfaction, it is much better then sitting and shaking heads: no,cant do.
