2024 gardens

Just a heads up for those that use the Micracle-gro potting soil. I picked up 4 x 25l bags about 3 weeks ago, threw the receipt away, darn. When I opened the bags, it smelled rotten and then proceeded to pick out sticks, not little twigs and other crap, cardboard and what looked like shingle remnants. complete garbage. Took a look on their reviews and there's a lot of gardeners that are unhappy about this. Called their 1-800 line, expressed my disgust and they said they will reimburse me. Wait and see.

I aways stick with the pro mix bails 107 L for 46 bucks. New bails go directly into pots old pots used soils get added to cow pooh and compost mix and into the garden when planting into the ground.

It's a win win and reuses the old potting soils. Mixed my last wheelbarrow yesterday hopefully. Only have some peppers, carrots and onions left to put in the ground.

They said they were going to refund me, I'm not holding my breath for that to happen. I should have checked the reviews first, seems like their quality has taken an extra large poop.

Our gardens are in and covered last night re frost warning. Zuchinni, garlic waist high!, tomatoes, spuds, spinnach, carrots and Jurusalem artichoke.

Frost warning for tonight too, I covered everything up last evening, get up this morning and the roofs are all white.

Garden update

Broccoli and cauliflower are all picked and done. Good harvest of both this year. Cucumbers are looking good, they're getting big and should be ready to pick in a week or two. Tomato growth has been great this year compared to last. Lots of fruit on the vines and more flowers everyday. It could be a good harvest. Beans are flowering and growing well. Garlic should be ready to pick in a week or two. Somethings been attacking them but I can't find it. It looks like it's boring into the necks. Peppers are doing very well. They're big and bushy and flowering with a bit of young fruit bulking up. This year was phenomenal for lettuces. We have been succession planting them since April and it's been a steady harvest. Enough that we have shared with our neighbours. Onions also are doing stellar. We started from seed early and planted out around March. There are a few bulbs as big as baseballs. Summer squashes are just starting to produce. Hopefully we will be grilling a few zucchini in a week or so. Corn failed. The chipmunks have ruined 2 plantings. They dig them up at 2-6 inches tall and chew the stems. That kinda sucks. Japanese beetles have started up now. I've been picking them steadily and placing them in a soapy bucket.
Raspberries are producing like crazy. It's definitely a bumper crop. We've been eating a lot of reds and still able to freeze a pint a day. Should last another week, at least, then the blacks and yellows will start up. Blueberry shrubs are full, but the robins have started plucking a few green ones to taste. Might need to put a net up. Peas are wrapping up. They had a good 2-3 week run, but the heat is stressing them out.

Sounds like you're having a great season. Question when you said broccoli is done what do you mean? Although cauliflower is a one and done plant, broccoli after the initial removal will shoot and produce heads right till it freezes solid.

You're right FFF. But we've already harvested the mains and side shoots. If we leave the plants for the entire season the leaf miners and aphids get out of hand. I'll refill the area with bush beans to replenish some nitrogen.

Well much to my surprise, they sent me a cheque for $39. I got a different brand, Fafard vegetable soil mix, this stuff looks normal with no garbage in it, came recommended from staff at the local garden gallery.

Well, first 2 red tomato's, tomorrow will be millionaires cherry tomato on crackers with a bit of home made mayo and a tiny square of fried bacon.
