This would be my guess. Sort of like a naturally-induced coma to avoid the stress of being attacked (and killed)- seems to happen to a lot of things my dog catches.

I shot one with my .223 right in the chest from about 50yds or so, he dropped right there, didn't move so continued calling in hopes of another showing up... Well wouldn't you know it this guy gets up about 1 minute later and runs away in a corn field. I thought WTF, found him dead 50 yds later though.... Upon inspection the shot went through his front shoulder (broke it) and right into his vitals, his insides were a mess, how he was able to move is beyond me....They are tough so always check to make sure the tongue is out and the eyes are open, if not he is not dead....
Lucky you, glad it worked out for you it could of been ugly...
you imagine as you are stringing him up to skin he comes alive... thats some strange e. hit me twice with 00B and im going to die. they sure are survivors. lesson from the wise make sure they are dead before handling them. good luck with the rest of the season.
This might sound strange but years ago I hunted a few times for coyotes with a gang and they had been long time hunters.I,am pretty sure they had problems over the years with using OOB ,they found that the fur would actually ball up around the shot and prevent full penetration. For that reason they used #2,s. Now I,am going by memory here from 25 years ago.Probably some long time coyote hunters can help me out here.
I know Oldhunter hunted with this gang if you want to PM him he would give you the details.
Coyotes can be tough! 2 winters years ago I called in a coyote into the swamp...he stood broadside and I smoked him good with the 22-250 and the blood that shot out from the other side was incredible. He didn't drop but blood was just POURING at out him and you could see it...I took a 2nd & 3rd shot and nailed him again...he rolled, got up and still ran...the snow behind him was just covered in blood! He ran down the frozen creek/swamp and left a LOOOONNNGGG red blood trail for almost 200yards! When I went to go retrieve him it looked like he was shot with a .300WM! Just a disaster...weird thing was you would think he would be in a pool of blood after dropping, barely anything there. He was a mangy looking coyote and glad I took care of him but WOW are they ever tough animals.
Ive seen this a fiew times, with animals in traps , give them a bonk on the head and figure there done, and next thing you know there moving around agsin.. Knocked out is my prediction..
A RAy
Knocked out.
But if this were a Matt Damon script that coyote would have escaped to live the remainder of it's life as a french poodle named "Muffy" in Scarborough, with only flashes of his blood soaked past revealed in mental snapshots without context. It would live in wonder at his own seemingly super-poodle ability to "come to" surrounded by countless warm dead bodies of recently deceased squirells and house cats every time he plays "get-the-stick" and things go black with his equally bewildered and horrified owner, whilst being continuously hunted by his kin from his shadowy past.
Or maybe he was just waiting for you to get a little closer and in the right position so he could grab your gun, use you as a human shield and waste all your hunting partners.
Nope, knocked out, I'm sticking with knocked out.:)
