No hero shot. Hen bluebill and hen scoter weren't much to look at.
The tide just shifted, so we called it quits for fishing tonight. We were fishing an ocean inlet and the fish stack up in there awaiting the buffet of bait fish and crustaceans that get washed into the giant funnel from the estuary on the outgoing tide. The current in the inlet can get to about 10 knots.
It was windy, but the tropical breeze had us down to our fleeces. The plan for the fishing was to start out with some bait for flounder from the S jetty. That didn't produce, so we drove over the bridge to the N jetty to try for big gamefish. We were hurling 2 oz bucktail jigs as far as possible with 7' rods. They would sink to the bottom and then get swept along the bottom with the tide. High in the water column are tarpon, feeding on the bottom are snook and red drum.
At first, we lost a handful of jigs. There's a lot of rocks down there and it took a few mistakes to learn the safe spots to cast. Eventually, I got a big tarpon on, but it came off the hook just as I was about to pass the rod of to Brandon. He still got to see my drag singing (after I had cranked it down to wear you couldn't pull line by hand). Later on, he about lost my rod when a red drum smashed his jig, but he couldn't get a good hookset and lost that one too. Both species feed on crustaceans by crushing them, and therefore have bony mouths which make it hard to get good hookups. Got to see 2 big reds landed: one close to 20 and one close to 30 pounds.
Now to wash the salt off the rods and head to bed...

Tonight we tried again at the inlet. Saw 2 more reds landed, but didn't get any hookups ourselves.
I take that back! Brandon had a good 3 minute fight from a lively rock before I explained that the motion he felt was just from waves, current and debris.
Tomorrow should be some lower impact fishing off a private dock in sheltered waters. Soak some baits for a couple hours and down a couple cold ones. It will be our last "relaxing" day for a bit. Starting Saturday, the hunting begins full force...
