The premise with the .410 test was to see if it was an effective "beginners gun". Ergo, he used the shorter, lighter kicking shells, which if you were looking at one for your son or daughter, you probably would be more inclined to do. After all, if you're going to go with 3" shells in a .410, you might as well get a gun that will last the kid into adulthood and but the 20g, and shoot 2 3/4" through it.

Ya, I understood the premise and I made the comment in respect to the "tounge and cheek" quote at the top of the test....a remark we have all heard before.....the test proved that the .410 is a "useable" and effective gauge for Upland and I just wanted to make some aware that it works even better with 3" on certain game.

"The .410 is a ballistic disgrace, and a crippler of gamebirds. Just ask me and all the other gun writers who have repeated that “fact” over the years. I believe beginning hunters should shoot a 20-gauge, not a .410, despite the higher recoil and extra weight of the 20. A comparison between the two, I was sure, would dramatically show the 20’s superiority."

Maybe its just my .410 (a Cooey) but I dont trust it enough to reliably kill game. It cant reliably break a stationary clay pigeon at 15m. I capped that as the max distance I'd shoot a grouse/rabbit, and thats with a wide open (no brush) shot.

I would expect that the 3" would pattern worse and have a longer shot string than the 2-3/4", thanks to deformation of pellets in set-back. This is the usual trend with 3" lead shotshells.
