you. They can complete the paper work for a small fee. You are taking a chance but I am sure some of the internet police on this site have purhttp://www.irunguns.cachased scopes with out permits and did not get caught. Not worth the risk. Paper work can also can completed online.
Rumour has it and this had happened to a couple guys a friend shoots with, US Customs will follow vehicles with Ontario plates back to the border after finding them parked at gun shops on the US side and pull them in for secondary screening. This was at Buffalo gun center.
One note, if you are looking for regulations and permits to do this legally: the rules for shotguns and rifles differ. I think the paperwork even goes to different departments of the great government machine.

I have been stopped coming back through port huron before. I wouldn't want to get stopped and have the item in my possession!
So, what about choke tubes? Would they fall under these rules?

A friend of mine went over a couple years back to buy an old gun from an auction down in the US. the gun was taken out of commision so it couldnt be shot as the firing pin etc had been removed. when he tried crossing back into Canada the US guys checked him out and allowed the model gun across into Canada but the gun was taken apart into 2 pieces and he took one half home after paying the taxes and also had to pay the shipping to have the other half sent to him a week later. Friend told me it was there way of making sure nothing became an issue of safety...
