I have not hunting with the Portuguese Water Dog but have spent quite a bit of time with the breed and they are willing to please there master. Very biddable. I see no reason that without training they could not be a good breed in the field as they are in the home. Do your research. Good luck

I googled "portugese water dog hunting" and there seems to be breeders that are breeding hunting PWDs. Interesting dog.

My daughter has a Porty. Some are great swimmers but my daughter's is not. I know she used to retrieve balls and even one of my bumpers, but whether they will retrieve a bird I don't know. Her Porty is coming to stay with us this week, maybe I will get a bird out of the freezer and see what she thinks of it.

One of our NAVHDA chapter members has one. He bought it to be a family pet who could also do some retrieving and light field work. He tried mightily to get that dog fired up on birds, but it never worked. Two years later, he bought a GSP and the dog is a great success at testing and in the field. That owner put a TON of work into the first dog, but the drive for water, retrieving and birds just wasn't there. The family loves him as a pet though.
