Eaten Alive

Anyone that thinks that coyotes killing deer is extremely rare is sadly mistaken. With snow conditions as they are, Deer are EASY pickens. We have 3 feet of snow in the bush and its like sugar. I bust threw to my waist with each step, But coyotes glide right on top. The deer yards around here are PACKED with yotes, I have found 3 dead deer all coyote kills and I have dragged them out in the open so I can shoot the coyotes. Between me and my buddy we have got 7 coyotes so far, They are getting smart and come 15 minutes after dark.


I have counted 15 different sets of coyote tracks going into a block on a single day and none coming out. We don't even want to run the hounds in there because of all the deer and coyotes. Its about a 300 acre swamp/bush as well that is super thick with cedars and I dont have permission to hunt it all so pushing it is out of the question as well.

Extremely rare was in reference to the 1100lb steer

Do they take bigger animals, sure they do but we don't know the circumstances behind these pics. Lot easier for a coyote to come back every time he's hungry and run a steer into a fence until the steer is tangled or breaks a leg or his neck then they eat him alive. It may be rare to you but it "ain't" to me. Lot less risk and energy expended for the yote too.

I stand corrected and apologize, you are correct. I have been hunting many many years on many different farms and have never heard of this happening as a regular occurrence (or at all for that matter). But that is not to say it doesn't happen regularly elsewhere.

It happens,

Ontario coyotes can and do take deer, however 20 pound southern-central USA yotes wouldn't dream of it.

Pretty much any Eastern yote is bigger than any Western yote, North or South. The small ones out West just gang up more.

Is there an actual difference in the speices "western/eastern coyote"? I always just figured adaptation/evolution of the eastern yote caused it to become abit larger and more aggressive towards bigger game.But when I said "Southern-central USA coyotes wouldn't dream of it" I meant the dogs around here have gray wolf DNA. some more so than others, but I belive just about every coyote north of the States (and some south) have been impacted by breading with the once more widespread wolf.In theory, coyotes are a major reason why we have so few pure wolves south of toronto.

I too live in this area the yotes are really bad I'm about 5 mins east of Orono they don't seem to move for much at my place, during the day only at night do they seem to come out any tips would be great I'm using a hare decoy and call

I would say that they are generally the same Species except the Eastern is more hybrid and bigger. That and coloration is different, thus the difference in pelt prices. Big or little makes little difference. If they can gang up, or run on top of the crust, or run something into a fence or onto lake ice, it's church.
