On a side note this exemption is pointless and speaks to the fact that people with no knowledge of firearms wrote our laws. The 303 SMLE is a bolt action, and thus by default doesnt need any exemption. No bolt actions have magazine restrictions. So here we have an exemption from a law that doesnt even exist.

Actually it's not the bolt action 303, but the fact that there WAS an autoloader made that took the same magazine as one of the SMLEs. This made the SMLE mags prohibited until they were exempted. Much the same as those ten shot mags that fit the Remington pumps became prohibited when it was found that they also fit the Rem autos. Those mags stayed on the prohib list however....

The Lee Enfield rifle did have a semi-automatic rifle that was made to use the same magazines, but due to the age and lack of standard lower capacity magazines I bet this is why the exception is there.

The M1 Garand used an 8 round enbloc, but now people make a 5 round enbloc due to some hunting restrictions around the world and this exception has not changed with that.

Which semi auto rifle was it? Never knew there was one that took the Lee Enfield mag.

Was some scheme back during the war to provide auto loading capability to the Allied forces. There was also the famous Pederson device that fit on the actual SMLEs to convert them to fire a shorter cartridge at auto speeds. Neither one was a real success and both bring sky hi prices to collectors today.

It was probably the Charlton rifle. I didn't realize it could accept a Lee Enfield mag till I looked it up. I only saw pictures of it with the Bren gun mag.

That's right, I'm wrong.....There were quite a few inventions caused by the gun shortage during both main wars. Didn't realize that the SMLE rifles were still in active government use, here in Canada. I thought they were phased out a few years ago. That's probably where all the old MIL-SPEC 303 ammo went...LOL

The Rangers actually are issues FMJ and SP. The SMLE is designed for such crappy conditions that is works perfectly up there.

I thought the rangers used No4Mk1?
