New too hunting looking for places

I figured it was time there was a list created that had all of the public areas someone could hunt in Ontario. With all of the new hunters in the province every year its hard for them to get a good start at it without knowing anyone or without somewhere to go. I figure why not give someone a reasonable starting point to a life long obsession such as hunting, and let them know that they do have areas they can go.

If anyone would like to contribute more public locations, please reply and I'll edit the list. Maybe it would be a good idea for a sticky too.


Please research the areas further before heading out to them as some areas have different rules regarding use.

Some areas also require an OFAH Membership.

Just north of Brightonis a conservation area (right on the 401) that alows shotgun only. Also, no discharge of firearms unless hunting. Hunted grouse there two ago with my brother who lived in Trenton. My hometown.... Check to see if sunday hunting is allowed in your area.

Hey Small Game,

Welcome to the community :) Most guys here are pretty tight lipped about hunting locations :P I am a new hunter as well but I have learned lots by asking relevant questions and following up on the answers. I too have no idea where to look for crown land to hunt. Many people have posted links to crown land atlas that is such an amazing tool. I have started to scope out a few places by my places already and I am ready to scout it out when the snow falls (I am starting off hunting rabbits.). Here is my suggestion:

1. Use the atlas to find areas of crown land that you can hunt on.
2. Make sure that wherever you are planning to hunt has a sufficiently large area to safely do so.
3. Use Google Maps or Google Earth to find your area in satellite mode and check for things like bodies of water, type of terrain, access roads and most importantly structures (you don't want to be shooting in the direction on cottages or industry!)
4. Once you have scouted what looks to be a good piece of land, go scout it on foot and see what it actually looks like. Can you navigate the terrain? Are the roads actually accessable? Is there game for you to hunt there?
5. Once you know you have a place to go, wait for the right season and off you go hunting :)

That's just my two cents. It's pretty basic. If any other the more experienced guys on here would care to elaborate they can. These are just the basics that I have read on here and many other websites I have been researching :)

You may also want to consider doing some door knocking. When I have the time I dress up in regular street clothes and knock on the doors of farmers in my area. If you are hunting coyote for example you will normally have a farmer that is more than happy to let you hunt them (sheep farmers especially lose many to yotes). That same farmer may allow you to hunt other big game on his/her property if you do a good job of driving down the coyote population. I like hunting but I really like the challenge of coyote hunting.
With the Crown Use Atlas and Google Earth you have two very powerful tools to do some scouting.

Is there still hunting aloud in the conservation? area I know where it is and I know they said no to the target rang.

Also what does every one do with the coyotes after they shot them?
