I never really looked into supplements for dogs to be honest, but 99% of what is sold for humans doesn't get the buyer healthier, but the seller wealthier.
It's a huge and poorly regulated market. NIH states that $32.5 billion were spent in the USA in 2012. Companion animals are certainly a worthy expansion.
Not saying your dog doesn't need them, but perhaps some additional research or a second opinion from another vet can't hurt either.
I had 3 TPLO surgeries done on my Bernese Mountain Dogs and the orthopedic surgeon strongly recommended we keep the dogs on a glucosamine supplement after the surgery's to help with the joints. He had all sorts of literature and reasons in support of it as proven therapy, so we took his advice.
Absolutely have always supplement with glucosamine/chondroitin with my working dogs over the years and put thousands of miles on them. Never had any hip/joint issues or any surgeries over the many years supplementing. That's proof enough for me and don't need a second opinion .
After two knee scopes, several broken bones, sprains and strains and arthritis setting into other joints (played lots of baseball and many years in auto assembly),I started using Glucosimine at the urging of the chiropractor and it sure works for me. If I miss taking it,I'm a real hurting unit within 24 hrs.
