They went a lot bigger than that, look up "punt guns".

10ga was standard for a long time with 2 7/8in shells.

The 8ga is still used in the UK for waterfowl.

It was suggested to me that these 8 guage slugs were used at the cement plant near me to break cement blocks or limestone in demolition.

They do use them for kiln cleaning, but they were hunting implements before that.
