There are a few tricks to catching groundhogs in cages , bait is one of them but there are others , many people have trouble caging groundhogs and I get quite a few jobs doing it I've caught them in as little as ten minutes after setting the best way to learn is to be observant and learn from what works and what doesn't , I'll throw you one tip though get some bananas
If you're a trapper and you're in an area that allows suspended land snare. Lay a 1/16th inch fox snare loop around the pig's hole. Camlock works well on the snare. Attach snare to 40lb muskie line on a Penn 209 reel, complete with heavy action rod. Download the groundhog warning chirp call off the Foxpro site. Set your Foxpro caller 10 feet from the burrow. Lay on your gut 20 feet away and use the remote to call to the pig. When Piggy pops up, pull the snare and you'll get the pig around the armpits. Gently retrieve the poor Pig and use a set of leather welding gloves to grab him by the nape. Release the snare gently so you don't harm him. Pop him into a livetrap for transport. Sing to the Pig, to calm him during transport. Give him a treat, then let him go at your buddie's backyard when he's away at work.
One bait that I have found very good for groundhogs is cantaloupe. works great.

lettuce, green leafy material worked at our place. Once caught they will be relentless at pursuing an escape. Connibear will work also if you can pattern them a bit and then sit and monitor the trap. I would not leave it unattended. You could put a wire cage over the connibear and the hole. Just saying. Some people have cages for keeping fish alive,would work excellent over the trap and hole.
When I was a kid we used apples for bait. The smell of it rotting used to bring then right in. Good luck.
