Chestnuts Roasted on an Open Fire

Ya, You definitely don't want to eat horse chestnuts!
In regard to the bland taste of the chestnuts...you could also remove them from the shells and maybe shake some spices, salt and pepper on them. I like them plain but not everyone does.
