The old question about swerving on the highway to miss a stray dog while you cause a four car pile up.....
And had they done nothing, you would've been the first armchair quarterback to condemn their actions ! The guy was tethered by a rope to his partner and animal control. Not much threat of getting killed there. And no, his NCO wouldn't reprimand him ! Police do this sort of thing every day. You only hear of a fraction of the incidents !
Sounds like he was in control and had all his mind. He also had a rope tight around him.
A few years ago a woman that I know did the exact same thing to save her dog on the Muskoka river. She never went to the hospital either. Afterward she told me it wasn't a big deal but since she is not getting so close from the river in winter.
This winter has been bad for dogs running in the bush etc. Ponds are frozen one day and thawed the next. The real lesson is to keep your dogs away from ponds. If that Officer had done that for my dog , I would honor him somehow.
watch the video. He was tethered by a rope with people ready to reel him in if needed. He went in maybe 40 yds. His life wasn't at risk. Hundreds of people do Polar Bear swims on New Years Day and don't die. What he did was above and beyond and the guy deserves to be thanked not criticized. I know if he saved my dog from certain death I would be extremely grateful.
