atv battery

This is what I've experienced having owned 2 ATV's and one snowmobile. Bought new, the original batteries in all 3 machines lasted at least 6 years in each machine. When they finally died I bought suitable replacement batteries all cost at least $70. One purchased from CTC lasted less than 2 years before it died. The others lasted 2 seasons and both died. Dead died!
I replaced them all again but this time I picked up one of those $20 solar battery savers from CTC and it was well worth the investment. My current snowmachine battery is now on its 3rd year and shows no sign of quitting. My ATV, same story.

You should always have your atv hooked up to a battery tender of some sort. I have a couple of those 2 amp Canadian tire tenders and they do the job. Get them when they come on sale for 20 or so bucks.
I plug it into the accessory/power port on the atv which is always live and that keeps things charged.

Dumb and dumber! I removed my battery and hooked it to the battery saver in the basement. I never even thought about using the accessory power source on my ATV.

I don't think that's dumb sawbill, because now I would like to know does that not drain the battery faster than it could charge if you plug in to the power cigarette plug. And what battery did you finally go with. Thanks all for the good advice I would have to go solar as there is no power when I am not at the cottage with out the generator.

I went to a local place that sells nothing but batteries and I ended up with some unknown to me brand name TC--Trans Canada which is made in China of course. The solar battery maintainer is a Coleman 2.5 (also made in China) which is on sale now at CTC for $15. You simply hook up alligator clips to your battery terminals--unless you're wiser than I then you can use the provided cigarette lighter adaptor on your ATV.
My snowmchine is at camp right now and its hooked up to another solar maintainer. Those gizmos don't charge the battery but they simply maintain the charge that's in it. I haven't had any problems whatsoever this winter when it came to starting the Skidoo.

I disconnect one cable from all my machines when not in use.
That includes Chipper Shredder, Snow Mobile, small electric-start boat engine, ATV.
I don't trust any of these to not have small parasitic drain that will ruin a battery if left a long time.

The ATV I have runs a clock so there's definitely a parasitic drain and dead battery if left too long.

My Honda TRX does the same thing. I've had to put two batteries in mine since new (2007) just because of that before I finally clued in (duh). Can Tire batteries are the worst (China). Yuasa are the only only ones I've had that seem to last the longest.

lol yep, They have to be left on a tender. Unless I'm riding every day or every other day the first thing I do is plug it in.

Yuasa, Odyssey and Motobatt are all excellent AGM batteries but I've had good luck with this from Walmart:

Thank you as always guys, have learned some thing new again. I will pick up a couple of the maintainers today and have a look at a reasonably priced agm battery from some were.
