Good on you and your family Joe for taking the old girl in. Hopefully she did just wander away from a loving home and a happy ending will ensue.

Check with ospca, all local veterinarians clinics, the town/surrounding towns (animal control) or local pound, share share share on FB ( witnessed many a time the power of social media and dogs finding thier way back home - including a stolen Vizsla puppy), post ad on kijiji, try local radio stations and newspaper to see if anyone has called about a lost dog.
Also - just because there are no tags don't make assumptions - none of my dogs have tags on thier collars (in fact after Titan received his rabies tag, a week later the tag and ring got ripped off the collar while running in the bush).
Please keep checking around until the owners are found! It could take a few months - but surely someone is missing thier old gal. But also thats not to say that someone heartless did abandon her.
Keep us all posted.

Great ending, but you are a good man for declaring you'd take care of her if you had to.
Kudos to you Species!
