TOHATSU

Tohatsu has been building outboards for Mercury and Nissan for ages already and has been selling motors under their own name as well . --- The smaller Evinrudes (15HP and down) are built by Tohatsu . --- The 15HO is an exception; that one is an Evinrude E-TEC . It's essentially a "detuned" 25/30HP E-TEC . Naturally , the price-tag is MUCH higher than the one of the Tohatsu-built-engine . --- They simply aren't in the same league. --- Now-a days , most outboards are pretty good and reliable ; however , if you want the best and don't mind to spend a bit more buy an E-TEC . They "beat" any currently available motor performance-wise , use less fuel and oil , passed the most stringent (California and EU) tests for "cleanliness" and are "whisper-quiet" . --- I bought a 25HP E-TEC .--- A-1 !!! --- They are manufactured in Sturtevant , Wisconsin . All the others are foreign-built .

Curious why you would look at a Tohatsu, which is sorta an unknown entity when you could be considering Yam, Evinrude, Honda etc. Is it a price difference or just wanting to try something different?

I hated the last E-Tec I used extensively. 2009 model 90HP. It ate a jug of $50 oil every 30 hours of use. Bleh. Underpowered too.

This motor was properly maintained and broken in as well. The dealer told em their was nothing worng with. Traded it in on a Yamaha and havent regretted the move one bit.

Yam dropped me on my head a couple months back worse than any comp has. So the big guys aren't necesarily my "GO TO" any more. They've lost the right

I've owned and operated a number of outboards (during the last 6 decades) All of them were good but my current E-TEC is simply better (in many aspects) . When they replaced the Ficht (with the E-TEC) they experienced some "teething-problems" which were quickly "eradicated" . --- The "so-called" techs that are bad-mouthing the E-TEC apparently didn't attend the necessary courses . E-TECs require a relatively higher sophistication-level (in order to "mess" with them) than the simpler engines . --- I'm not "coming down" on any modern outboard (I like all of them) but that still doesn't mean that all are equal . --- Generally , the Yamaha is the "lamest" of them . Had I decided to get a 4-cycle it would have been a Suzuki (the best of the 4's) . --- Despite the fact that I was a licensed (certified) gas- and Diesel-mechanic I wouldn't be qualified to "play" with these intricate electronic systems because of a lack of training as well as diagnostic-equipment . --- My advice : Purchase what you're most comfortable with and what dealer would give you the best service . --- You can't really go wrong with any of them (aside from cheap Chinese crap) .

Well everyone tells me to stick with known quality. The only two made in semi civilized places is etec in USA and tohatsu in Japan. Those shooting brownings know jap quality (Ecspecially if there's high tech and there is) is as good if not better than USA and certainly better than peru etc. Apparently if I don't like tohat I should get rid of my 20 cause tohat made everything merc under 25
