they are not ticks, they would be under the fur, and ticks are not black like that, only the head of the tick is black and the size of a pin head, the bodys are usually tan in color....they are most likely deer or horse flys.

They are tics, seen them on my dogs quite a few times, much more common in Virginia when I went down, we had them on most dogs and people ( I had two on me). They get filled with blood and the result is what you see.
I thought they were flies at first, but when I zoomed in, there is nothing flying around above the deer, and I can't see all the flies sitting on the deer with none hovering around above. So, probably ticks.....although it does look like there are some wings glistening in the pic.
I don't know what they are but I find it odd that they are all over the face and seem to be on one side of the deer more than the other... seems odd placement for ticks... but I've never seen what a bad tick infestation looks like.
When a deer swims through or lies in water the ticks crawl up to the face of the deer. Here is a pic of two ticks, one normal and the other after filling with blood:Quote:

May seem like a dumb follow up questions but in all my years I've never run into a deer with any never mind what seems like 20-50 ticks on it.
Obviously do not shoot / eat this animal?
Update I have done research while waiting for the awesome forum support team!
Apparently eating venison that has ticks on it is perfectly fine! regardless of how gross skinning it would be with that many ticks on it..........
Ticks or flys
Seeing the corn in the back ground it appears the deer is around a farm quite possible it's just flies just like on a cow.
No that is Deer Fibroma. I shot one like that in December ML hunt a couple years ago and got a hold of MNR. That's what it was. No problem eating the meat and is caused by a virus not transferrable to humans.
