Baha is spot on - the best way to learn is to go with an experienced person but if you can't find someone to teach you a couple of books for field IDing and the internet back at home are pretty powerful tools. I have picked mushrooms ever since I was a kid. But honestly there are still times when I'm not sure best advice I can give you is if not sure don't eat it.

yes us poles do know our mushrooms as picking is really big in our culture. I have been going every year for the last 30 years! As others have said, even tho im pretty good with identifying them, I still come across ones that I am not sure and always wise to leave them alone if that's the case.
This fall was only good for one kind of mushroom which one Mike posted a nice pic of them. They are a good mushroom but definitely not the best and not my first or second choice if I have the choice of course. All other mushrooms that I usually pick there wasn't a trace of them this year. It could be a number of reasons, but I am thinking the extremely dry summer didn't help.

Honey mushroom... a big, older one.
From the top - oysters, black trumpets, blushers ( do not pick these until you are confident in collecting, this group of mushrooms - the amanitas, are mostly deadly poisonous ), honeys, Russells bolete and chicken of the woods.
Right on. I pick a lot of birch and king bolette but I have never found the russels up my way. I have asked Santa for some oyster spore plugs and I am going to try and grow my own this year.
Are those oyster growing on a conifer?
I have to admit there were very little grouse up my way this year. Mushrooms really made our hunting trips a lot of fun. The wife and daughter in law were having a great time looking for mushrooms. I bet we even walked past grouse - lol.
haha. Mushrooms can save a day. I'm not a hunter and have the opposite problem, bunch of grouse blowing up in flight only feet away from me scaring the bejeeezus outta me... ya ya, laugh at it all you want, I know I wouldn't make much of a game hunter
