I just got off the phone with the head of the lake unit enforcement unit of the MNR.. 100% legal to spear fish for carb with a spar gun. Carp only. I can't wait!! Also thank you "John Hunter" I will look into that!
Sounds cool. What do you do with the speared carp?
My buddy loves to eat them. He makes fish soup. Most European people love them. I’m sure out of Lake Erie they are good to eat. Hell I love fish sticks and who knows what sea creatures they are ground up from!! Lol
This is incorrect, check the Guide to Eating Sport Fish.
For my favorite fishing spot (Long Point Bay, Lake Erie) if you eat a 21" carp the guide recommends you limit eating that fish to 8 times per month. If you eat a 21" rainbow or brown trout, you should only eat that twice a month, meaning that the trout is 4x more contaminated for the size class.
The guide recommends zero consumption of rainbow or brown trout from that size class for pregnant women or children. However, it says pregnant women or children can eat carp 8 times a month!

People choose to believe what they want to believe.
You hit the nail on the head, bottom feeders never take up as much contamination as predator fish, the larger and slower the fish grows the worse the contamination. Check out how bad lake trout are in Ontario waters.
Look how much sugar we eat in just about everything.. should we even start the topic about factory raised Chickens.. I'm sure a few carp or walleye out of Lake Erie or Ontario is not going to kill us. We are spoiled in Canada. Travel around the world and look what people eat and where they get it.. Dish me up carp any day of the week, but yes.. I would take a nice cut of deer chops or moose before Carp.
8 meals per month (4/month if over 45") compared to 32 per month for walleye in my area so carp are 4-8 times more contaminated then walleye...I probably caught the weight of my boat in walleye last year so have no need for garbage fish in my freezer, I wouldnt even give my dog 8 meals a month of carp....why when walleye and perch are just so much better and plentiful anyways. I wouldnt dull my fillet knife on carp scales...you guys can have it all to yourselves, bon apetite!
