"Granddaddy's Gun"....Aaron Lewis

My grandfather just handed his two guns to me. A Browning A5 Belgian and a Savage model 99 308. Both are near mint.

Accuracy on the model 99 isn't great, but I think that's because of copper fouling, I don't think my grandfather has ever put a brush through the barrel.

Toddy, I've owned several 99's and all of them were accurate with the exception of a .303 with very worn rifling.

Get that bore spotless and it should shoot well. One trick to shooting the 99 (or any lever with a two-piece stock!) is to rest the front of the receiver, rather than the forend, on the front bag.

I've never had a .308, but I've owned three .300 Savages, and all would shoot to about MOA.

Thanks for the tip!
I gave it a good cleaning. Put 20 rounds of 180 grain federal box down the pipe on sunday. I was under an MOA off the lead sled.

Its got high see through rings on it which I seriously dislike. Will probably put a different set on it at some point.

Get a cheek rest kit and build up a nice cheek rest. Once you get a good cheek weld to the stock, it can the easiest to shoot gun you have.

My first gun was my papa’s gun. He took a ton of deer with it and I hope to do the same. It’s a 742 Remington in .308, the Canadian centennial model. It’s heavy as hell for a bush gun but shoots straight and has history. I’ll always use it but take amazing care of it so one day I can pass it on, hopefully a hundred years from now it will still be taking deer.
