Semi auto rifle for hunting ...?

Started hunting over 30 years ago. Never would even look at a semi when I was buying a new gun. Now I have 2 semi shotguns and just got my first semi 22. But all my big game rifles over the years have always been bolts. Didn't handicap me when I took 4 deer in one sit. It was more of a handicap that my 270wsm only held 2 shells in the magazine. I have since relaxed a bit and only take 1 now instead of using half the gangs tags up in 30 seconds.

My dad hates lever guns but loves his pumps, does not mean either is bad.

I don't know if I would ever have a semi big game gun, simply because I like to reload and play with loads, you cannot do this as effectively with a semi as you have to be concerned about the cycling.

I like to shoot pumps, bolt guns, hinge actions, semi plinkers, classic levers, and a not so classic straight pull bolt.

Shooting a grouse at 50 yards with a straight pull gun from 1915 was pretty cool, never did have a deer show up in front of me.

I believe it's what ever you are used to.
I shoot a Browning BAR in 3006 for al big game.
I believe the first shot is the most important one no matter the gun action.

I can't use a pump gun to save my life. Early in my hunting career I switched from a pump slug gun to a semi. I could always get the first shot off then somehow double pump the next two shells onto the ground without even chambering another round . . . . my dedicated deer gun is a 12 ga Winchester sx3 with the cantilever deer barrel.

As for rifles, I have planned on buying a Browning BAR for the last few years. The new ones I find sexy as hell but I only hunt bear the odd time with a rifle, and well, if I ever draw a moose tag i'll worry about rifle selection then lol. I have a xbolt 223 and 30-06. Don't need another rifle really (even though it never hurts to own 10 lol)

Wasn't an 870 express by chance was it? My 12ga 870 slug gun would dump the 2nd shell on the ground with the hull from the first one. Then I'd have to rack the 3rd one in the chamber. I have other pumps, including another 870 turkey gun that do not do this however. After it happened twice in the field I got an SX3 slug gun as well but the 20ga.

Rem750 carbine 18.5" barrel 30-06, 1.5-4.5x32 will be put to good use this year.

I have a Rem 742 .308 carbine iron sights I carry doggin for deer and moose. Never did shoot anything with it, I'm a bolt fan myself if I had a bolt gun with iron sights it would be my dogging gun.

Only semi I use exclusively is my 12gauge Maxus for waterfowl.

Was an older Winchester 1200.

I’ve always been a pump guy,be it deer or waterfowl,I learned early on that I could empty my pump 12ga almost as fast as my partner’s semis,and would say more accurately as well,more ducks with less wasted shells......so when I was shopping for my first big game rifle as a teenager,I bought a Remi pump in 30-06 and never looked back,I’ve owned 3 of them over the last 33 years along with many other rifles,but there will always be a 7600 in my gun safe.
Back in the day,the Remi semis were known to be jammers,I think it was the 742B maybe that was the lemon?
The new 750 Woodsmasters are sexy,as are BARs of any vintage,if I was gonna buy a semi it would be one of those two,leaning towards the BAR.......but I’ve got no real burning desire to buy a semi,got enough rifles as it is gathering dust.
Check out TradexCanada,they usually have a few used BARs for sale on the website and great prices as a rule.......I “was” tempted to buy a BAR in .300WM from them a few months ago just because it was a good deal,lol....but can’t really justify it,

It's all about personal taste and what you like and what you're used to.
I've never cared much for the idea of having a semi for a rifle, but that's just me. Nothing wrong with it if you like it.
I'm more of a Mauser action or A-bolt kind of guy myself. Actually, truth be known my true love is for my Win 94 lever actions. Now that's what I'm talk'n about!
