Stay safe it's that time of year again.

Why is it when someone does go through the ice somewhere on some body of water the general response from the outdoors community is how much of an idiot the person is? anyone who chooses to ice fish, or go on the ice is taking a chance, regardless of the mode of transport. It potentially makes us all idiots doesn't it? Dont get me wrong, some people do completely dumb things, but in most cases its just a guy trying to go fishing. Maybe I'm off a bit, but my immediate response when I read about a person who went through the ice I think, Jesus, I hope he is ok, that really sucks. It isn't "what a dummy, naturual selection."

This isn't directed anyone in particular on this thread, I see it on a bunch of Facebook groups.

Yep just like the scare last year when there was a report of 50 people through the ice lol.

I had just come off the ice at another location with 20 inches of good ice. Little while later as we headed out for some shopping some commotion in port bolster. Fire trucks , ambulance could be heard in the distance for miles and a steady stream of them showed up for 40 minutes. Everyone that came by said they were stupid for being out there because it was so warm. Well 3 days of warm weather will not take away 20 inches of good ice lol. Ctv rushed over from port Perry and they had the Hercules plane ready to go from the Trenton air force base lol.

Turned out to be a fake call from someone I a diabetic state lol. I was telling people there was plenty of ice and I could not see that happening. Yes I see people going into a crack but not the ice giving way .

We stayed at the lake for an hour while all this was happening. Either way it wasn't going to change my plans that I was going to fish in the coming days lol. .

Because the article usually states that their are alive... the next natural response is .."what an idiot". Why, because they didn't take enough cautions to be safe.

A pan full of Perch isn't worth your life, the cost of the machine you just dunked in the lake or worse, the danger you put 1st responders into trying to save your sorry azz.

Theres also instances where people and machines go through where someone has moved a hut and not marked the spot, which leaves large spots of thin ice or even big open holes. Pressure cracks can open up that was solid ice hours before. I watched a friend go through a spot as such, the ice was over 2.5ft thick where I walked 8 ft beside him.

^^True. That's why even on lakes where i know the ice is 2 or 3 feet thick i keep the sled at 70-80 km/hr+ at all times so in theory I'll make it across the cracks and holes left by others. Helps make it across the slush fields as well.
