How do I find fellow hunters?

"Best" hunting buddies ? That's like good scotch or wine ! It takes time to get good buddies. Yahoos and newbies are a dime a dozen but every once in a while you find one that fits in. I like having a mix of talents/occupations/ages in my deer camp. Turkey hunting is pretty much a solo deal and duck hunting you are limited by what fits in the boat or blind unless of course you are field shooting. Of course right now with Social Distancing etc., it be next to impossible to meet anyone. LoL ! And that goes for best buddies too !

In my case it is mostly through work and college 16 years ago. I have met and hunted with a few I have met online but those relationships never seem to last as the other party always fails to reciprocate the offerings. I always get the guys so willing to go hunting with you but are never ever able to provide a stitch of land of their own or have their own equipment. I have been very resistant to put myself out there. Always on the wrong end of a hunting one night stand lol.

I will say, since joining a few facebook groups I have met some great guys, none of which I am able to get out with, but have been offered. I am at that point where my kids are keeping me home. Looking forward to the days where they are attached to my hip any limitations are only as far as they can walk!

HaHa. Now that you say that , I remember the same thing in my teens, you hang out with people with similar interest, and the rest are weird for sure. lol

Growing up I didn't really have anyone to hunt with some of my friends liked camping but none really hunted much. Even my parents didn't hunt. My mom did a bit when she was a kid and she taught me to skin rabbits. During college I really did not have anyone to hunt with either. Years later I got married in 1996 my wife never liked guns but all my kids have shot guns. My youngest is my hunting partner and can legally carry his own gun this year. My best friend who I grew up with moved to Ontario 13 years ago and took up hunting 4 years ago, so we sometimes hunt together but he lives 3 hrs north of me. Over the years I have met and hunt with a few people around my home and have met and hunted with a few guy's from this forum.

A few people at my office would like to come out and do some target shooting with me and one guy is interested in learning about hunting.

I think you will find your only going to have a few close hunting friends and they take years to find and years to make a BF bond.

Pay attention to this forum and come fall there are sometimes people on here offering to take people out and sometimes hunting camps need a new member. Although this year might be tough because of Covid 19.

It's tough when you have a young family to find the time for hunting and fishing, at least it was for me. I find you drift away from your friends as priorities at home it make it tougher to get out. My daughter is 11 now and she loves going to the bush with dad. I'm starting to reconnect with old hunting and fishing buddies as she spends more time with her friends. Part of the life cycle I think.

My hunting buddies (4 of us) are guys that I shot with - sporting clay's, rifle and pistol at the range. A couple of us then decided to try hunting and as luck would have it one of the guys owed 100 acres and said 'have at it'. Since then hunting is something we do as a group - turkey, waterfowl, and deer. Since then buddy expanded his farm to 300 acres + access to another 100 acres that his sister owns. We have some guys that hunt seriously (like me) and other guys that only hunt only the controlled hunt and is more of a social thing. We now have a 'Chalet' that was built off of one of the implement sheds that offers us some comfort - wood stove, big screen TV, patio furniture set, coffee maker, fridge, hot plate and BBQ.

Where are you located in Hamilton and what do you hunt?

I have a 6 year old and 2 year old so it’s hard to get out hunting and with work also. Also I moved at the end of 2015 and haven’t had enough time to look for new deer spots so I decided I would go for waterfowl so at least I could go hunting when I could find a day. But last year I went out and was getting to my spot where I was going to setup and another boat was approaching me and I didn’t like it because it’s pitch black out still and I don’t trust people. So this guy came over and started talking to me for a few min and asked me if I wanted to hunt with him. Normally I would say no because I just met the guy and he asked me to go in his boat and leave mine and go down the shore a few hundred yards from my boat. But I said f it and took a chance to meet a new hunting friend because I have none. So that day we got some birds and we went out a few more times after that also with his son and some of his cousins and uncles and I’m glad I took the chance and went with him. He’s and his son are good people.
