I envy you watching it for the first time. I must've watched it dozens and dozens of times. I basically grew up on the DVD of this documentary ever since I was maybe 5 years old. It can convince any man to just pack up and leave for the mountains. It's like that one song that never gets old, doesn't matter how many times you see it, it's like you see something new each time. Plus his narration is just therapeutic.
Great videos and a very interesting man. It’s incredible what you can do if you set your mind to it. I can only watch and dream of the feelings he must of had when he left main stream society and whittled a perfectly fine existence without the hustle and bustle. That, to me, is true freedom.
Another film similar in nature to this one is Waterwalker by Bill Mason. It’s worth a watch.
Its a superb documentary. I watched it about 15 years ago on PBS.
My favourite line (paraphrased) "I decided to take a break today from building the cabin, so I climbed the mountain"
At 60 he started and stayed til 83 (I Believe). He didn't live off the land (totally) and had many float/ski plane deliveries...but it has always been my dream to live like that. Sometimes, I think I was born in the wrong century.
My Self Reliance on YouTube is a Canadian guy (near Muskoka), whose early video's detailed his cabin build, outdoor cooking areas and wood fired sauna. Certainly doesn't hold the character of DP, but many of his early video's have almost no narration or speaking.
