Preparedness and you - How prepared are you for a 30 day shutdown

Like MikePal the ice storm woke me up as well, and we had to eat from a shelter - never again. Homesteading has become our prepper plan and self sufficiency as a rule. Being as self sufficient as possible protects and insulates from inflation as you retire to a different income standard. Plus running a farm gives you a "thing" to do and stay more fit and healthy, plus you know the source of your food production.

Something simple as chickens (although chicken math does factor in YouTube it lol) free range if possible can provide you plenty of high calibre food.

As Line052 and MikePal, I also went through the ice storm of 98. We were without power for 2 weeks and had to leave our house. Never again.

Maybe a Nuke is unlikely, but a Carrington Event Solar storm is possible that could knock power out across North America, another ice storm is also possible millions went without power for an average of 3 weeks.

As I indicated I now have a generator two freezers stocked and lot's of canned goods. I tend to have 1 - 3 months of food on hand.

But yeah my experience these things do happen.

It is that Mad Max scenario with no power and no return of power for 12-18 months is exactly the worst case if it does occur (Google the Carrington Event 1859, and again during the 50-60s in Hawaii - starfish prime) when North America was more electrified and the impacts of Nuke testing exposed further the EMP effect on the more modern infrastructure. Since there has been no large scale nuke testing since the late 70 or 80's we really have no idea how the emerging transistor world, and digital world which has grow exponentially in the last 40yrs will be affected. Extensive testing has occurred by MIT and DARPA to measure effects of EMP on military equipment and electronics. However, what Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has done after 911 was to risk analysis major infrastructure impacts of these natural or man caused impacts. That report was released in 2008, and really blew up the prepper movement. Equally frightening was a DHS report that timelines the civil breakdown after an EMP event.

Again - perspective - a 1% chance of 1% chance of a natural or nuke EMP - but if it happens the impacts are severe.

If you think of everything in your home, car, heating, trucks, trains, planes, lights that is/would be affected, it pretty much every aspect of daily life.

DHS has predicted 90% of North American population would be dead 12-18 after EMP. All these reports are online. There a Canadian Content youtuber who early on produced excellent content for Canadians needs (mostly USA audience now). I could link all the DHS sites, but he compiles on his channel with all the links, and doesn't sell the products angle. It is 16 billion a year industry now, so be wise to what is a sales pitch, and what is information void of selling.

I guess we would be ok for 30 days or a little more . Definitely not a long period of months. In a situation like this it would get ugly in the city very quickly. The survival would be up to each individual some smaller groups joining together could make life easier to make sure there is enough good to get by .

In the end you need to do what ever it takes to survive . If that is to look for days for food then that would be what it takes. I have enough soft baits to fish for years lol. In the end it just wouldn't be about food but heat as well. Gardening ,heat sources and protein would need to take place so a smaller group would be more beneficial than for each family to fend for their own. This group can't be to large tho, there are plenty of things that would need to be done every day to survive.

You say you have freezers full of food but when the power is out what do you then do?

It will go bad would you smoke or dry cure your meats ? This would make it last a while longer. During the winter it would be ok to keep it for a while but during the summer your freezer full of meat would have to be cured to salvage it awhile.

Generator and lot's of fuel on hand. Even with a power outage there will be gas stations also with generators. Also conversion for propane.

Not all generator's will work some have a computer system in it that could be fried . If the outage was created by an emp.
