4 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle with the .177 airgun at 495fps and it kills rabbits no problem with a shot to the head.
The high powered one is a 22 at 850fps, I actually ran them over the chronograph :), that is about 29 ft lbs of energy.
The energy of a 22LR high velocity at 100 yards, based on CCI is still 80 ft lbs, if I can kill rabbits with a .177 airgun pellet at the muzzle with a single shot there is nothing wrong with a 22LR at 100 yards.
Apparently the ideal range to sight in a 22LR is at 75 yards, just a bit of a drop at 100 and just high out to that range, but we used to sight in and kill groundhogs at 100 yards no problem.
I know that this .177 airgun killed squirrels in the big maple trees when I was a kid, made a nice snack with just the sound of the spring but the wind really gets to those pellets.
Lots of great videos on you tube. Problem with high velocity is if it is just just over 1125 fps and if your 1260 fps at the muzzle.. it is not long before the sonic wave passes the projectile disrupting its flight pattern. Standard velocity for accuracy hands down.
For 100 yards I picked up the cci velocitor @ 1450 fps muzzle...1180fps at 100 yards. It seems tho that your gonna get flyers and that is the ethical if you dont want to miss it dilemma with 22 s. One video had a 5 llb chuck roast wrapped 4 times in denims pants and it was straight through and a wicked size wound channel.

I don’t own a 300 win mag but sure let’s pop dirt pigs with a 22 and let them crawl down the hole to die a horrible death eh?
I can’t even begin to guess how many ground hogs I’ve taken with a 22. If you hit them right they don’t move even an inch.
I also can tell you that many 22’s I’ve seen at the range that can’t even hold close to MOA. So far I can count them on one hand that can. 3 to 5 MOA is typical.
So taking a squirrel at 100 yards you are more apt to take a leg off or a nose.
50 yards is quite a different story.
