I've had these for several years. The base where the bottom attaches to the grip snapped off the first year I had them while squeezing them closed one frosty morning. I ended up repairing them with a combination of JB Weld and small screws. Kolpin must have known about the issue, as they used to offer single bases without the grips on their site.
As for mounting a gun boot, I found that I didn't like having the boot running down along my leg. I ended up putting my grips on the front rack, and anchoring my boot in them using bungee cords in such a way that the boot end could be removed without taking the whole boot out of the grips. I also found things stay much cleaner this way, as mounting the boot in the usual way collects a lot of mud and debris from the wheels. I use a similar setup across the box of my side by side.
I use a boot. I like it because if it nasty weather or muddy gun stays nice and dry and clean. I have never had any issues with the boot scratching the gun. I have grips as well but I mounted them on my ice fishing box and use them to hold my auger.
I strap mine in soft case on front rack before or after hours. Once in legal time I place on my legs against my belly with a bungee strap around my back hooked to handle. If in really rough ground I strap it back on front rack.
