I think it's incidental. So long as you are not using the sunfish as bait ie.casting it back out you are fine. I have had a similar experience with hammer handle pike hitting a lure and getting smashed by bigger ones. Pretty common on one lake we go to up in Timmins. ps. selfishly I would like to tell you pike tastes terrible and has too many bones and is high in cholesterol and fat and sugar pcbs and mercury. Leave them for me and I will keep them.
