The story COULD have gone like this -

News flash!

A mother and two children were mauled to death, next to their home, by a sow bear with three cubs.

The bear was seen several times in the neighborhood days prior to the attack. A resident hunter near by, said he had seen the bears the night before, but said he did not want to do anything about, it in fear of being charged.

The Ministry, in the past, has also failed to take action when called for similar situations such as this. The Mother and children will be sorely missed.

The ministry, when contacted, stated " they are unsure about how to deal with situations like this, and advise people to shoot bears, that may face a danger to the public.....but....also advise that the shooters will face charges until the ministry spends millions of dollars on a study about how to deal with nuisance deadly animals.

The police have no comment.

But in real reality when was the last time a black bear has actually killed a human. I know i haven't heard of anything of that kind on Ontario.

Ok i just looked into the black bear attacks. Ill give it to you this time. Most attacks come when your sleeping so you better watch out.
There's still more of a chance to die in a plane crash than being attacked by bears.

Either way it no reason to just shoot the bears.

Or maybe there's a better chance of getting shot in the controlled hunt . Than being killed by a black bear in Ontario. . .

It happened in Ontario several years ago in the Chapleau area , a woman doctor from Cambridge Ontario , [practiced at the clinic my family and I go to], was killed by a black bear when she and her husband were on a camping trip. This happened in broad daylight , she was not sleeping.
This had been in most newspapers in this province and out , and on the national news on TV, do you not read newspapers or listen to the news on TV?

few thoughts, all they are are thoughts.

1) Black bear fatalities are rare, but do happen, as jaycee rightfully noted above. I think there was a jogger some years ago as well (could be mistaken, may not have been Ont)...

2) Maulings, are what I might call between uncommon and rare. We don't have to go too far back into the cobwebs of our memories for a recent incident.

3) Could things have gone south? yes that's a possibility. Were there any immediate and present signs it was going south? Was anyones well being clearly and unquestionably in danger?

4) Deciding to take action himself, carries a lot of risk and uncertaintity. Things might also have gone this way.

There are reasons for "no discharge" zones.


5) By taking it upon himself, he has now cast a shadow on us all. Ammunition for "anti's".

6) Hunters/Police officers proficiency. Not sure a day will ever come when that debate will be settled. Theres lots of "evidence" to suggest hunters often miss or just wound.....same is true of LEO...Often when they do put down wildlife (bears..or in one case a Moose in North Whitby/Oshawa) all kinds of people (public) had lots to say about the barrage unleashed at it. Will say only, if push comes to shove and its "my" life on the line. Id want the shooter to have shot and killed something. Shooting at paper never replaces or is equivalent to shooting at a living thing, let alone something that can mess you or someone else up big time......Most hunters experience buck fever to one degree or another....

At the end of the day, from what I read...He decided to act, he broke a law....
