If moneys not a big issue, then i would look at getting a higher end Acrylic call or at the minimum a call that can be "hand-tuned" to the callers liking. Lots of the cheaper calls have a reed/gut system that isn't versatile (ie reed position can't be changed). Shaving the reed or moving the reed to different spots on the tone board can make all the difference in the world. Some of the higher end calls have lifetime warranties as well
Whatever call you decide to get, I would get a short reed and not a flute. I have used both types both in the field and in competition and the short reed is by far the better sounding call in my view. So start with a short reed and save yourself the trouble of learning on a flute and then having to learn again when you switch to a short reed.

You can pay up to $150 for some of the more popular big name brand goose calls- But I still use an old Olt call that belonged to my father- we paid $15 for it some 30 plus years ago and it has lead to the demise of many geese. You can still buy them on Ebay for under $50. Same with duck calls you can buy an Echo call for $40 US and it will fool just as many mallards as the call that cost $150. But sometimes people think because something costs more it is automatically better. Good luck!
I haven't used one in years but I guess that there still some out there being used. I have a number of original Grounds Guides Best when Tim was starting to convert them over and OLT put an end to it. Cool deal but I don't think I will give up a modern short reed for the OLT lol.Quote:
