Years ago, likely like most boys I played with sling shots a lot. With practise, so long as you know your limits they can be quite devastating. I never used one on anything live but I could destroy can and bottle at a decent distance. These days I bet I couldn't hit a pumpkin at 30 yards. :)
I would venture a guess its little different than a trad bow and blunt head. If you hit its down stunned at worst,and not going anywhere fast, such that grabbing it and finishing it is easy, or instant if you hit where your aiming. At worst it's a small target and you hit nothing but air.
In a big picture kind of way I don't see how its any different than using a bow, or rifle. Know your limits, stay within them. A bad shot at a Bull Moose 500 yards away is every bit as likely to leave a wounded Moose, as is a 50 yard shot with an arrow from a x-bow or compound.......
