Before early Greece, people knew the Earth was round or at least curved. It was only when advanced math and algebraic formulas were solved could the size of the earth be solved. The math needed is now pretty basic, and taught in grade 6 or 7. But at the time the people solving the proofs would have been equal to today's top scientists. The idea that early civilization were so stupid that they believed the world was flat, is because of a basic misinformation campaign of the Romain Catholic Church to discredit non Christians.

The Phrase "Ends of the Earth" or " Edge of the World" do not come from a belief in a flat world. It is a reference to "ANY Lands or seas" beyond the Known world or what is shown on the maps of the Known world at the time. If a person was said to have sailed off the edge of the World, it was a "POLITE" way of saying.." He's dead Jim...and He's not coming back".

There were drawing of the world being held up by various things like animals, trees, columns etc. They were equal to a grade 4 model of the solar system. Nothing more then a simple visual display of a complex system.

This thread was to recognize the works of one of the greatest scientists of many generations, not for a pi$$ing match, please comment on the thread if you would like but egging people on has no bearing on the thread. JoePA chose to apply his views and that is his choice, he was rebutted and we move on.

If you would like to comment about science of Dr Hawking please feel free but this post of yours does nothing to further the discussion.

I think everyone on this site knows my views on religion and Steven Hawking. What discussion? it is a group hug. Are you a new member of the forum police? I can invite another member to participate in a thread, can I not? Atheists are replying to this thread , I am asking the religious right, for their opinion on the great mans theories and how they would rebut them.

Who figured out the Earth is round?

Answer:
It has actually been known that the Earth was round since the time of the ancient Greeks. I believe that it was Pythagoras who first proposed that the Earth was round sometime around 500 B.C. As I recall, he based his idea on the fact that he showed the Moon must be round by observing the shape of the terminator (the line between the part of the Moon in light and the part of the Moon in the dark) as it moved through its orbital cycle. Pythagoras reasoned that if the Moon was round, then the Earth must be round as well. After that, sometime between 500 B.C. and 430 B.C., a fellow called Anaxagoras determined the true cause of solar and lunar eclipses - and then the shape of the Earth's shadow on the Moon during a lunar eclipse was also used as evidence that the Earth was round.

Around 350 BC, the great Aristotle declared that the Earth was a sphere (based on observations he made about which constellations you could see in the sky as you travelled further and further away from the equator) and during the next hundred years or so, Aristarchus and Eratosthenes actually measured the size of the Earth!

Once upon a time there was this brew - we don't know where was or how it got there but there it was - then zillions of years later some creepy thing started to stir - then zillions of years later these creepy things crawled out of the brew and began to take form - then zillions of years later we had fish, birds, animals and even a human who can think - just then little Johnny stands up and asks - but teacher where did the brew and the place where these creatures crawl to come from - well - ah - Johnny don't worry about that - lets talk about black holes and an unknown dimension of time -

You ask me where did this universe and everything in it come from - my answer is Almighty God created it - if you ask an atheist he will be honest and admit that he doesn't know or will begin to explain all the theories that have been developed in attempting to explain the universe's origin - theories that keep changing because they themselves know that they are full of holes - what it boils down to is this - man in his sinful nature does not want to be accountable to a higher authority - he wants to do what he pleases - and given a free will can choose what he wants to do and believe - I know where the universe came from - an atheist will forever try to find out and only when he dies will he find out that there is a God after all - surprise - surprise -

Well Joe, if Hawking was alive and you were asking him that question, he would have the answer, and he would tell you, you would be the ,surprised one,

To say "God did it" is the easy way out, sciences goes way beyond that.

I will ask the simple question to you, who made God? Where did God come from? If God did exist and scientists found him/her then they would keep going, always moving forward.
