Technically the Elk that were released in Ontario are not native and nor are the Turkey. If a cougar population formed from escaped cougars years ago I think it could now be considered as native as the Elk or Turkey.

Turkey's were native...they were re-introduced...
Don't know about cougar, they've been around a long time in other provinces, they must have migrated to Norther Ont a long time ago. They are on the endangered species list for Ont :

The Mountain lion (Cougar) was already assessed as endangered when the Endangered Species Act took effect in 2008.
Bet I've had 10 people tell me over the years that ministry released Cougars to control coyote population. Who dreams up these rumours? Lol
I hope to see a cougar one day, Just hope it's not hunting me when I do ha.

I worded that last post poorly. You're right, the Eastern Cougar is native to the area, just extirpated.

I figured that cougar I saw was an escapee, not a resident.
