Has there been a case of this in the last 20 years? Hunters just aren't that stupid. Who doesn't actually see their target before shooting and knowing what they are shooting at.

It happened on the six nations not that long ago!

I always wear orange regardless if it is bow hunting or gun hunting, except for waterfowl. IMO, hunter orange should become mandatory for all deer hunters.

Why? If someone can not or not willing to look at a "target" which is no further then max 50 yards(for some a bit more)AND can not see and comprehend that the MOVING target is human, within stone throw distance-we have a big problem.
Thru this thread it shines thru that the people involved in "potential" bad situation did exactly what they suppose to do! Check the target before pulling trigger.
The few having the encounter where they felt threatened- some may "overthink" the situation, some may already stated-they had orange posted ,but it was not visible.

What would You accomplish what we already do not have?
Several provinces in Canada do not have even in the gun season mandatory orange, and their accident rate is no different then here..........

With that logic ,many things in every day's life should be ERR on the safe side.

Farm to the West of us. Opener morning of the Nov controlled hunt we heard no less than 12 shots that morning - at one point it sounded like Omaha beach during D Day! One of the guys drove over to see how they did and he came back shaking his head.......they have nothing. WTF were they shooting at!!??

Seriously we go out and if there is a shot....maybe two there is usually something down or we are following a blood trail but how can you have a dozen shots in one morning and have nothing to show for it. 5 guys shooting 12-15 times in one morning........they were sound hunting. Trigger happy morons.....they are out there.

I tend to agree that the likelihood of being mistaken as a deer is pretty slim. I think it's good to discuss these scenarios so people can expect to see it in the field. I learned to hunt without any guidance from a mentor and had no idea a few years ago that these things are a common occurrence to deal with. Especially on busy public land and waterways.

It is all about being more visible. Even it is within stone throw distance, but some hunters are not extra cautious. We must ensure about our target and beyond it but there are other factors as well. Like some people said: don't wear white. Color plays very important role to be more visible. On the other hand, within half an hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset, the moving objects are not visible enough or another factor is the weather condition, when it is cloudy , especially in Fall or late Fall. Some hunters may carry a deer decoy with antlers early in the morning, that could be another thing. And agreed to disagree but we need to have a look at statistics, if some provinces in Canada do not even have in the gun season mandatory orange and their accident is no different than here that could be a good justification. IMO at least having orange hat makes a big difference if not wearing Orange jacket. As I mentioned, I always wear orange while bow hunting as a personal preference.

More than likely just making noise to drive deer. I've been on drives years ago with a bunch of farmers and they shot constantly to help with their "dogging" efforts. I dont' agree with it, but do you seriously think they heard 12-15 things they thought were deer? I guess they could be be very bad shots, but I bet they were not sound hunting.

Even when I go deer hunting if I'm hunting a field ill walk to my spot with my flashlight on in my orange vest.

The light brightens up the orange in the dark so some dummy won't shoot me walking in LOL
