I have to wonder though ... what is everyone's vision for First Nations today ... I mean what does a good life of a FN member look like?
Is it still living like FN did back in 1850 ... or something else?

Why don't we start there ... why don't we let FN define HOW they see themselves living today ... do they want to assimilate, or do they want everyone to go away and go back to how it was in 1850?? I don't actually understand what they want ... you know, if everything could be "fixed up".

Probably what they want they can never ever get back. Rich lands all over the USA which were taken away from them when they aligned themselves with the Crown and fought for the British and ended up with inferior lands in Canada. Then Canadian aboriginal's who also fought for the Crown ended up with inferior lands in Canada.

The problem as I see it was started with the British Monarchy and as they own Crown lands in Canada they can do all the compensation and sort the mess out that they started.

Nice to see a guy call a spade a spade....I've posted many of the same things he said on here...the gravesite debacle is purely political and bares more scrutiny as to why it came forward just before an election is called.

Whelp ... until there is agreement on what that vision is TODAY ... then this won't ever end.
But I'd first start asking first nations about how do they see themselves living out their lives ... I wouldn't focus on capital, or materialistic things right away. I'd be like ... do you want to integrate with the modern economy, or do you want to live in isolation with your own community? Or is there something else that we don't see.

Most cultures will adjust with the times ... the Italians did when they came to Canada, and they prospered. They actually faced lots of prejudice when they arrived, but they faced that head on, and look now ... they've built most of the residential communities in Southern Ontario. My wife's mom is Native American ... their tribe assimilated into Western Society so well that they are not even recognized as a status Indian (which I think is crazy ... either you are or you aren't a Native Indian). Search it up ... Lumbi tribe out of North America ... they get no status. LOL ... that's what you get for doing well with the cards thrown at you.

The indigenous people and the initial colonialists began with the idea of jointly sharing this great land. That idea went out the window as more and more immigrants pour into this land With them came the need to expand settlement. Clearly indigenous people were not in a position to comprehend the level of migration that would come envelop the land. As the colonial numbers climbed the aspirations of share this great land evaporated. Nor did indigenous people have any say on placing limits on the level of immigration. One wonders, if today that had a say, how they would view current immigration polices.

The Indigenous embraced the new lifestyle immigration bought to this country. As it flourished and grew with innovation, they freely adopted (assimilated) to enjoy the same material things that were newly developed. Like the automobile, snowmobile etc etc. It improved their lives and they adapted to it freely.

Today walk onto a reservation anywhere and see how it compares to any 'colonists' suburb. Cars and trucks in every driveway, satellite TV, computers, stoves, fridges , smartphones etc etc. All the conveniences they gladly own, even though it came from white society.

Would they, looking back change things? ...NOT on your life. Silly to suggest that they would choose to continue a nomadic life and watch the world evolve and grow beyond their grasp.

I have to wonder then, why they grow so concern with the damage that is being done to the natural environment, the pollution of the water resources, the takeover as pipelines attempt to access unceded land dragging with them more settlement expansion. They should be running out to embrace these things, a long with the toys and jobs and their share of the economic wealth that come with them. Strange how they went out their way to halt rail traffic, no long ago.
